Fees, funding and grants
Are there fees for accessing GenV data, biosamples or services?
Yes. Fees will apply depending on the type of request, data preparation, linkage, biosample processing, analysis environment use or other support required.
Costs for GenV supported Amazon WorkSpaces include a monthly base fee plus an hourly usage fee for the time the workspace is actively in use. Further details are available via the User Guide - Indicative AWS Usage Costs & Billing.
CVDL datasets are accessed through CVDL’s Victorian data Access Linkage Trust (VALT). The associated costs comprise two main components. The first is the cost of data access and preparation, which varies depending on factors such as the number of datasets requested, the approvals required from data custodians, application setup, and any data extraction, preparation, or linkage activities needed. The second component is the cost of the VALT workspace, which is determined by the required computing capacity, software licences, data storage needs, and the duration and timing of access.
When will I receive a cost estimate?
For GenV supported Amazon WorkSpaces please see User Guide - Indicative AWS Usage Costs & Billing to estimate your potential cost estimate.
For CVDL costs please use the CVDL cost calculator available here. CVDL will provide a final quote after reviewing the technical specifications for your project.

How will I be billed for these fees?
GenV supported Amazon WorkSpaces
You will receive an invoice each month covering your AWS usage for the prior calendar month. Invoices display a single aggregated amount in $AUD rather than a breakdown of individual AWS cost items. This keeps your invoice simple and easy to process.
You can also monitor and view your historical costs via the Research Portal.
For further information, please refer to the User Guide - Indicative AWS Usage Costs & Billing.
Can GenV costs be included in grant applications?
Researchers should consider likely GenV access, data preparation or support costs when preparing grant budgets and seek advice early if needed. If you would like further assistance, please Contact Us
When should I contact GenV about a proposed grant application?
As early as possible.
If you are interested in designing and delivering a project in partnership with GenV, including studies embedded within or conducted alongside GenV, or developing a collaborative funding application, please Contact Us to discuss your proposal.
Please note that reviewing proposals, exploring collaboration opportunities, obtaining the necessary approvals, and preparing GenV-related cost estimates can take several months. We encourage you to factor this into your grant planning.
Can GenV help prepare a grant application or provide a letter of support?
Yes. GenV may be able to support grant applications, particularly where you are proposing a collaborative project with GenV.
Support may include:
- Discussing the feasibility of your proposal
- Identifying opportunities for collaboration
- Providing information on GenV capabilities, data, biosamples, and costs
- Contributing to grant application development where appropriate
- Providing a letter of support, subject to review and approval processes
